There are four main categories of electric motors, each with their own advantages and disadvantages:
- Stepper motor: Economical to purchase but somewhat energy-intensive. High torque, but it decreases as speed increases.
- Closed-loop motor: Stepper motor with an integrated encoder, which also allows for step loss management.
- Asynchronous motor: Very powerful, very economical, but low speed. For basic use only (conveyors, etc.) because variable speed drives do not allow for additional features.
- Brushless servomotor: The most luxurious. Great flexibility of use. Fast speed and constant torque across the entire speed range, quiet, and the best energy efficiency (making it a product of choice in the battery-powered DC version). Lower torque, but smaller footprint. The high speed allows the addition of a gearbox to convert the speed into additional torque. The associated drives are programmable and equipped with numerous features and operating modes (speed mode, torque mode, homing mode, multi-position mode, etc.).
The right choice therefore depends on the application. It's up to each individual to define their priorities in terms of torque, maximum speed, size, energy consumption, power source, drive features, and budget.
